Book Review: This Fight is Our Fight

This Fight is our Fight
By Elizabeth Warren

My Copy

I bought This Fight is our Fight after the 2016 election. I wasn't a political junkie. I became aware of Sen. Warren during the 2016  presidential race.  She speaks up for the ordinary middle class person. I love how she speaks up to Donald Trump, and our congress, and senate. Elizabeth Warren is a progressive that speaks volumes to the middle class, and the poor. She persists!

Her book is not a biography. Instead the book is about the Middle class, and the corporate, and financial world. She discusses the history of the financial system. It starts with FDR's  administration  protection and opportunities for American people.

She talks about her family's hardships. Her mother who worked for Sears and Roebuck. In the 1950's middle class could make it on a livable wage. How she was able to go to college because of the opportunities that were available to her then. The times have changed unfortunately.

The problem right now, is small companies are being eaten by the big corporations.  Now, with only a few corporations are less competitive. The big corporations have self interests. They have special interests in the government called lobbyists. There only interests are lining their pockets. The corporations want de-regulation to save money.

Unfortunately when you don't have regulations. These big corporations take advantage.
The small community banks have been eaten up by the big banks. These banks then play with our money by investing without the knowledge of their bank customers.  The government is not looking over their shoulder any longer. Instead looking out for the big corporations.

In the Reagan administration they reversed the course  FDR promised. Instead of opportunities for all. Reagan's administration promised
              Trickled down economy
Meaning eventually it will come down to you. It was a theory that never came to pass. Because the big corporations were just taking, and taking. Instead of giving to their workers. They were keeping for themselves. Then when President Trump came to his administration. He promised to drain the swamp!, never happened.

Senator Elizabeth Warren stands her ground- She persisted.  She stands her ground to help the American people.  She gives us stories about hard working Americans.Who can't make it.  She talks about Walmart, especially. Where I used to work. She describes it exactly.

Many people think that Walmart is a great place to work. Believe me, it used to be. When Sam Walmart was alive. But, when he's children took it. Things changed.

When I worked for Walmart. You had to fight for hours with co-workers. There wasn't the 40 hour work week for most of us. The workers who were there since 2008, were grandfathered. They could work 38 hours. The hours were based on the sales the store got in the last quarter. If Walmart lost money, your hours were cut down. The co-workers fought for hours with each other. You had to watch your back. There were many employees that worked for Walmart that were forced to apply for food stamps. Because their hours were cut.

The American people are paying for that. Why the American people are paying for food stamps. It is the responsibility of the big corporations, not the American people. Big corporations are just too greedy.

The book is easy to understand on a very dry topic. Thank you Elizabeth Warren for writing and explaining this very devise topic, and explaining in easy terms. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in politics, and the understanding the reason our country is in the situation it is in, financially.

Russian Roulette: Book Review

Russian Roulette
By David Corn
and Michael Isikoff

Purchased copy

Since Donald Trump announced his presidency. I have more informed By reading books, and watching TV, in politics, government, and American history.

I have been a regular news watcher on MSNBC. After the election, I started watching Rachel Maddow. She would tells us the  news stories that no one else was reporting. Trump's  real estate in the Middle East, Trump-Putin-Russia connection,Oligarch connection,  Miss Universe, money laundering, hacking of the DNC, etc. Rachel was reporting, and kept reporting all this crazy stuff. To me, it sounded like a spy novel. The sad thing, it is TRUE!

When I learned where these stories are coming from. Then I learned these two guys were writing a book. I knew I had to buy it. I was not disappointed. I wish none of this was true. The book reads like a spy novel, think Daniel Silva.

I knew who Trump was from the 1980's from NYC. He was a slum lord. Always trying to get away with not paying contractors, swindling people, etc. He style was a big bully. Pull his weight and money around because he had lots of money. Well, there was a time he was in a lot of trouble. He lost a lot of money. Used corruption to get out of hock by money laundering.  I didn't like him then, I don't like him now. CON MAN. The sad thing is I have family, and friends that are bought into him. Brain washed!

So scary, he has become a dictator. Slowly, but surely we will slowly unravel into a fascist country. I saw it coming before he was elected, so sad.

The last straw which was reported in the book, and now is reported. That a young Russian infiltrated the NRA. She influenced our GOP Senators, and Congressmen. She was reported to go to Christian's  Breakfasts. They are giving money to NRA. This is all in the book before it came out last week.

The only thing there is a question is the "Golden Shower".  Most everything else has been proven by our intelligence agencies. No matter what Trump says. Nothing has been truly proven yet against our President.

My thought why doesn't he just tell the truth, and defend himself. He acts like a guilty man. It is hard to review the book without going on with the investigation and telling my thoughts.

Chapter 14 was the important chapter in the book. Why Obama didn't do more to attack back? Obama was afraid it was going to look like it was partisan. I think he was damn if he did, and damned if he didn't. Obama didn't want to attack Russia, and retaliate . He was afraid Russia may get into the electric grid, or even worse. I think he was overthinking, and rationalizing.  Which helped the Russian's, and Trump.

McConnell, the Senator Majority Leader didn't want to do anything. Shame on you. What I do remember hearing( not in the book) is that Obama had talked to people. That once he wasn't president any longer. He wanted the investigators to keep on uncovering. To hide that information from Trump. So there still is a paper trail and Trump can't sabotage.

I read Russian Roulette during the time of the Russian Summit. Trump is so stupid, really. Why Trump through the American people under the bus. Why he is suggesting that diplomats being interrogated by the Russians? Is he crazy?! Interrogating, you mean torture! Suggesting that we will accept Russia help with cyber security? He has not done anything to safeguard our country. Our elections are in November? The best thing would have allowed the transcriptionist to interview her. But, the  GOP doesn't want that. They apparently want the Russians to infiltrate us again. Trump walks a word back. It is three times he says, " It's a hoax". Then Sanders lies to the American people. She just tries to turn the story around. To confuse people. The reasonable people know whats going on. The Trump Cult eat
s and swallows every word. It so sad. They don't see what he is doing, Fox News( National TV), social media.

I am sorry my review turned into a rant. But, I just had to give my take on the situation. Thank you Mr. Corn, and Mr. Isikoff for informing the people what has been investigated. What we know. By the way, the reason these investigative reporters wrote the book. Because Mueller's investigation doesn't have an obligation to inform the people. It is Rod Rosenstein. The truth may never come out.

Why our country is going back in time with abortion, and our freedoms. Why our country is not separate from religion and state.
The truth has to come out. We, the American People have to fight back. Vote this November, Democrat to take back the house. Where we have check and balances. People have to have empathy,  heart, not reckless, nationalists, not divisive, and racists crazy people running around.

Old Post- Snow

Is this what snow looks like. I have not seen snow for at least four years. Remember in my last post, I told you they were expected snow. We never got a drop of it. They cancelled class and the next day a two hour delay. Well today they did not close any schools down on the Grand Strand. It was cold for us down here of 19 degrees- B-RR, B-RR that is cold. And we actually this time around get snow flurries. It did not last long maybe an hour and then the snow melted. But we actually did see a dusting this time around. All of us get giddy about this. Now it is suppose to get cold again tonight and my son, David tells me again snow. We will have to see if we have school tommorrow or a late start. The reason they do close everything down is first of all we are not eqipted for this weather we do not have snow plows and sand.. Only the airport and the county can not use it.

Now my good news for you readers that are wondering how I did. Ready for the drum roll. I did do well. I passed with a 88 on my first A/P test. I made some stupid mistakes. I will know next time. What happened was she asked the question and they were multiple choice. You really have to read the answers. I must have gotten 3 wrongs for not reading the question right and analyzing the questions too much. Example, how stupid I knew this one. To make water how many molecules make water?
1) 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom
2) 1 hydrogen atom and 2 oxygen atoms
3) 2 hydrogen molecules and 1 oxygen molecules
4) 1 hydrogen molecules and 2 oxygen molecules

Of course the answer was 3. How stupid. I just answered without thinking there would not be trick questions. Anyway I am sure there will another test and I will make sure this doesn't happen again.

I have been taking classes for Medical Coding that I started last semester. I decided I really did not want to do that. I realized I used to be a nurse and I let my license lapse over 10 yrs. ago. Medical Coding is too distant for me. I love the medical field. I always loved health teaching. So I changed my major from Medical Coding/ Clerical Medical Assistant and I am adding Nursing. I did so well last semester I decided all this would be is a review but somethings like Medical Technology has changed. So not everything would be old. I would learn some new things. But I must be nuts. It took me till middle age to decide to get back into it. I took it for granted my Nursing license.

He's Coming Home By Next Week

This does not make any sense. My son made it for 8 entire weeks. He made the demands of boot camp. Learning to make a bed, iron shirts, learn to listen and respect of naval officers. He left for Great Lakes in Illinois from Myrtle Beach SC on April 12th.  It was hard for him as well as for me. The military controlled when they were allowed to make phone calls. It was terrible because I never knew when he called.  Close to the end of boot camp he was told there would be a delay in PIR for a week. They found out he had a medical condition. They were needed to recieve paper work then they would waive his medical condition and he would graduate. After a week I recieve a call he would have his PIR on 6/11,

David was told by his recruiter to keep quiet about his ADHD. He was told if it doesn't come up there is not a reason to tell. But, David was having some problems in the beginning and then toward the end he was finally getting it.

David told me he was able to graduate and then go onto Groton Connecticut for Sub School. Great I thought I was just sad that I could not go to his graduation and wait to see him when he comes home in September.  I was content knowing my brother and my father went to his graduation. He even recieved a ribbon for markmanship and was able to carry the flag for his division.  That tells you how much this meant to him.

I was proud of him. This meant more to him than high school.  He has matured and proud of his accomplishments. He was also sick the entire week before graduation but he did it. He went through the test of battlestations. He did it, great job David. The entire weekend was with the family with a cold.
I expected him to leave Groton Connecticut on Tuesday. I was terribly upset because I had thought he would let me know at least that he got there. He was still sick. He did not call me.  I only found out on Facebook that he was still in Chicago. I thought he was just sick. Later I found out the real story. They were investigating his medical records.  But, it does not make sense let him graduate. They should have not let him through and graduate until they had all the information.  He must have fell through the cracks.

I was having a difficult time when he was growing up with a single parent without a father. He was just a rebellious kid and having some problems. I took him for some conselling never realizing they would say he was depressed and anxious.  This was just typical teenage rebellion nothing else. The navy would straighten him out. Not thinking this would follow him. He did not and either did I that they gave him this diagnosis. After he graduated high school he was in control of his emotions, not difiant. He stopped taking Concerta, and he was fine. The sad thing was he was not able to find a job and was mopping around.  Most teens would do the same thing too. He was looking forward to leaving for boot camp and do something with his life.  He does not have depression it was just the situation he was in. The medical people they are quick to jump at anything and call it a diagnosis.

Now he is waiting to be separated. I never heard of someone being a sailor for a week and then separated. Once you graduate you go on.  This is just too bad. He will be leaving the navy in a week. Would you believe he is considered a military veteran even for a few days. He is not looking for the benefits he wants to serve his country.

The problem in the navy that they are trying to get rid of navy service men.  There are too many and I think any little thing they want to get rid of people. This is just a excuse.

I have contacted our Congressman Henry Brown in SC.  It does not look to good though. I stated my case and if it is determined that they can do something they will.  This is just hard because he does not have depression just a rebellious teenager that has worked out his problems and taken a little longer to mature.

David Coming Home

David has been away for boot camp since April 12th.  I am very proud of him what he has accomplished. Making the bed, ironing, listening to his superiors, etc. It has been very emotional for me. After the first phone call there isn't any communication for about three weeks. The letters are with held for three weeks.
Finally the first letter came I was thrilled.

Each phone call I recieved from David I missed. The first one I was still in the process of exams. I had to go to school for something. Of all things I left my cell phone at home.  The Navy decides when the recruits can call not the other way around. Each time he did call I was either at work or I left the phone somewhere.

After about a months I started to recieve phone calls from him.  He was upbeat. Said boot camp was tough and nerve wracking but afer the third week it was getting easier. My son has never been away from me. This I am sure was a different experience. He had to learn to depend on himself. And no excuses.

Then somehow the last week before Battlestations something happened.  David was delayed for PIR. David has never learned to stand up for himself.  Went to a counselor for some guidance.  They found out he had ADHD.  He never disclosed the " moment of truth" to them he had ADHD.  This was not the reason for disqualification from the navy. We later found out he could still be in the military for this.

His recruiter told him not to say anything.  David did not know any better. He thought that the recruiter was wiser and knew what he was talking about. He was just excited to go in that he was not thinking of the consequences. Because eventually someone is going to find out your medical issues.are.

Last year he was mopping around the house and I was concerned like any mother would be. So, I did not think about the consequences of taking him to a counselor.  The counselor is not a doctor. He only saw my son once. He is a counselor goes by the name of Mr. not Dr. in front of his name. He diagnosed him with depression and anxiety. \

David only saw this counselor once. You don't diagnose someone the first time with depression. I used to be a psychiatric nurse. I do know how that works. You can not diagnosis someone at the first visit. You have to see them a few times.  Besides Clinical depression is amount of time, not a short period.

Through all this David had PIR, which is a navy graduation. This means he graduated boot camp and is a navy sailor.  He made it this is so ridiculous. I can see when he is a recruit but he graduated.

He only did what the recruiter told him to do.  But the navy won't see it that way playing devils advocate. You knew it was lying at the moment of truth. You should have told them. David has always been in a sheltered life he did not think about it. He just thought I am going to make something of my life. I will do something that is important and serve my country.

This is a three fold situation that makes it complicated. He with held information about his ADHD. The depression and anxiety which is the truth he did not know about.  The recruiter never said have you seen a counselor for counseling. If he did I am sure David would have said something.  The navy said they could have waived the ADHD, but not all this.

The navy will also say that David has his own mind he knew he was lying. It is just tough. He is going to be separated from the navy. This is a tough break for him. He will not even be getting a honorable discharge. Within a year he can go back to the recruiter and re-enlist and a medical doctor can clear him.

I was hoping he could get a psychiatric evaluation could help him prove he does not have depression. But he is fighting the with holding information.  How do you fight the navy, when they always say no excuses.

My son and I were in the same room when he said don't say anything. But it is our word against he's. If there was someone else in the room that heard that. That would help. But, what are they going to do. Slip him through by allowing him to stay because what the recruiter told him.

I don't think that will happen. Do you know how many recruiters tell recruits that. If they allow my son to do this. How many others will claim the same thing.  I hate to say this is a no win situation.  Because he still with held information. It is just sad that he listened and believed the recruiter.

Now David realizes that all the recruiter wanted was his commission. Nothing else.

I went to the congressman of SC, Henry Brown. But I did not know the exact facts. When I went he wanted a brief statement. I gave him a 2 page detail. Because now I realize after exactly what I could have said. Giving alot of excuses.

I then went to the recruiter and they said there is nothing David can do. Except wait till he is discharged. The recruitment station seems not to know much about their recruits and the system. They are there to do a job and get recruits. That is it. Not if you ask a specific question. Right now I have a bad taste in my mouth about the navy.  The military is there to do a job. A darn good one.  But, sometimes I think they should weigh the circumstances, and investigate.

David is meeting a lawyer today.  The lawyer wants a statement. I am not sure if the navy lawyer is on David's side. You know when you read these things about navy. The navy is going to protect themselves.
The navy has a interest to protect the navy not my son.  But I hope I am wrong.

David I imagine is coming home most likely this weekend or next week sometime.  The good thing is which I think also. This is not a waste. David was able to mature and grow up. This kind of envoirment would have been good for him. Because people with ADHD do well with structure.

A Jewish Author Takes Home the Prize

The Booker Prize was announced yesterday for a author, that lives in England and the British Isles.  The Booker Prize website, has information about the winners of the short list and the long list and their books.

I am happy to post about the winner. The author is Jewish, yes you heard right a Jewish author won the prize.

He has also written, previously, in 2003 "Kalooki Nights".
The new novel,  Finkler Question was just published on Tuesday in the U.S.

Since winning, the Booker Prize there is a lot of buzz out there. I can't recommend it as yet. I have not read it. But one of my blogging pals,  Marie, from Boston Bibliophile is reading it. I can't wait for her
 post .

I am going to, not walk but run to get this book. It is nice to hear a Jewish author to get recognition occasionally.   And, yes this book is about the Jewish experience in England.  I also heard that it is funny too.

Moving....

So unhappy about my book blog...My book blog is over 11 years old. It has been a hobby. In the scheme of things to most of you. Think it is not a big deal. Not, when I had this gorgeous custom book blog designed specifically for my book blog.  I won't tell you the work and sweat and tears to save the money to re-design my blog.

I now, have to migrate, and consolidate all  my posts from Susan's Literary Cafe from 11 years ago. The sad thing is most of my book blog followers don't know I have moved to Bagels, Book, and Schmooze.  I will need to re-build my following again. That will take a long time.

My graphics are being held for ransom at the Photo bucket for $400. The web designer, Lea Christine refuses to help me. She never made it known to me that she was hosting all the graphics at photobucket. Unfortunately I have no recourse with the web designer. Because the web designers are not regulated. There are not any laws to protect us. Luckily, my other blog had only one problem. The other designer for my other blog, Lori, has helped me.

I am hoping my target date for my book blog to be back in action in about a month. Please have patience. My new location is http://bagelsbooksandschmooze.blogspot.com. Please have patience.

Update: Since I wrote this blog post. Which as been a few months. I am almost finished re-designing my book blog. I found someone that did a great job. Not, as custom as my other book blog. But, still has a personality. I hope you like it. With some patience in the next two weeks it will be finished. I hope you will come back and visit me soon.

I can't believe this is going on. Trump meets Hunger Games. I can't believe our country is coming to this. If you believe in your civil rights. Then you need to pay attention to what #45, Bannon, and FCC wants to do. What this means to you. This is scary, he wants to control, "Net Neutrality", or internet freedom. If this passes we are becoming like communist USSR. What else is worse. I just learned that the Sinclair Co. Wants to buy up other TV stations and consolidate. What that would mean to us. I don't know if you are thinking in the future. Is a National TV station. Which means that these stations can influence us. By not giving us the true facts. Instead it would be slanted to their beliefs. What is not objective. We, the people need to pay attention now. Stop the FCC and the Trump Administration.

The Year of Voting Dangerously
By Maureen Dowd

This year has been the ugliest,  strangest presidential election since I have been alive! no kidding, y'all say. What gave you that idea?! I never was involved or cared about politics till this year.

I voted as a Republican because that was what we did in my house.  I listened to my father. Not this year. I knew of Donald Trump when I was younger when I lived in NJ. What a womanizer, a slum lord, and was in bed with mafia, and criminals. Many investigations involving him and the NJ Casinos in Atlantic City, shady deals with real estate. Of course the list can go on, and on.

The sad part this year. It is hard to figure out who you can talk to without it  becoming a fight with someone at the Thanksgiving table. I never brought up politics with my father, or my brothers for fear of repercussions. Pretty sad as this is what has been going on in many friendships, and families. People now don't talk to one another.

I felt that Donald Trump was a joke. I couldn't believe anyone would vote for him. But the craziness began. Who in their right mind would vote for him? Well, unfortunately there are many out there. There are so many theories of why he won. Why Clinton didn't win.

FYI- I didn't want either one of them. I voted for Bernie Sanders. Because in my mind he was a better choice. I didn't want Clinton. Because she doesn't tell the truth. Because of her husband. I didn't want to see him in the White House again. I didn't want Trump because he was reckless, incompetent, thin skinned, doesn't shut his mouth, is very open how he feels, doesn't act like a government official, very crude, rude, anti establishment, nationalist, acts like a tyrant, isn't for the American people, is against everyone's civil liberties, if you are LGBT, Jewish, Muslim, Afro-American you better run to Canada........ The list can go on, and on.

I picked up the book, The Year of Voting Dangerously because of the craziness of the election. I was looking for something to pick up to explain the craziness of the election. To make me feel better. For the author and I to connect and commiserate together.  Also I saw a talk on Book TV and was impressed with what she had to say.

I found the book not about the year. But, the contemporary political history of the United States. I wasn't expecting to read about the previous political climate. Which I can see why because it adds to the reason of the craziness of 2016.

Her essays are taken from her posts from the NYT from when she started to the most recent. I did enjoy reading until it started getting repetitive. In the beginning each chapter is about Trump. Then she writes about Hilary. She then goes a different direction. She writes about the previous political years.

She wrote in length about the Bush's while in office. Bush 1, Bush 2, and Jeb. I don't totally agree with her about them or about Hilary. The one part we both agree on is Donald J. Trump. I enjoyed the book about 1/4 of the way. But,  the book became tedious. Her writing was a bit slanted as well.  But, I would not recommend buying the book. I would have rather read bits and pieces of the book. It's not worth reading the entire book.

I wasn't planning on talking about my feelings and fears about this year's election. I was planning to write a review only.  But, unfortunately, I couldn't help myself. It was a bouncing board to let out my own thoughts and feelings. I would like to apologize to my blog readers if I offended anyone.  But, this is a place I can finally say what I feel. One of the other reasons I purchased the book was because of the panel on Book TV. It did sound interesting what Maureen Dowd had to say. It perked my interest. I should have stayed with that. Below is the Book TV show.

Hillbilly Elegy: Book Review

Hillbilly Elegy
By JD Vance

I purchased Hillbilly Elegy because of the election this year. The book was talked about on the TV news networks.  The book is not just about the life of living in the mountains. It is also about the culture, sociology, behavior, and history of living in the mountains. Or what we know as "hillbillies".

The book was not an easy read. It is a memoir of growing up in one culture, Kentucky mountains,  (Appalachian Mountains) and then migrating to another( Ohio).  The book was written by the prospective of their grandson, JD.

He's Grandparents, and his mother, and himself, and his siblings had a difficult life.  His Grandparents married they moved to Ohio. They moved to the steel factory. Which was great for a time economically.  Unfortunately, many of the people that worked in the steel factory lost their jobs. No more jobs were to be had in the area. J. D. and his family economically, and culturally had a difficult time of it.

You would think this is what the book is about. But, it was more than that. It was about the culture clash between the south, and the north. Most families were not able to adapt from the Kentucky mountains migrating to suburbia. Coming from the Appalachian mountains to Middleton, Ohio. Which was very difficult for them and the others that came from Kentucky. J.D.'s Mawaw, and Grandfather were dirt poor in the Kentucky mountains. When the moved to Ohio things changed for the better economically. But, the culture differences were still there. Think of the Beverly Hillbillies.

JD grew up knowing violence, domestic abuse, drug, and alcohol abuse. His Mawaw( grandmother), was a strong force holding the family together. She was a tough cookie.
Continually, J. D. was bounced around from house to house each time he's mother divorced. Finally by the time J. D. was fourteen years old. He's Mawaw wasn't going to tolerate it any longer. She wanted to give him a stable home with lots of encouragement to J. D. Mawaw felt education was a very important.

Many children were surrounded by trauma inside and outside the school and home.  His Grandmother didn't want this to be an excuse for her grandson.  Which can include sexual abuse, domestic abuse, drug, and alcohol abuse, violence. The list can go on, and on.

J.D. become successful. He graduated high school, went into the Marines, eventually went to Yale, into law school. The hardest part was adapting from the "holler" to suburbia. Try this, while in law school he was going out to dinner with other college students, and instructors, asked what kind of wine he would like. He has never had wine in his life. Couldn't even pronounce the name. He was embarrassed as I am sure we would be too. I hate to tell him. This is not a "Hillbilly thing". Because I didn't know at that age either. But, I am sure that is not the point he is getting at.

My Review: Hillbilly Eulogy was a fast read. I read the book because of Trump's win. But, I don't think the book explain it. It is about the "Hillbilly Culture", I always wondered what it was like living in a rural, poor, area. I have traveled years ago through the Kentucky, and Tennessee mountains.  The book does give a glimpse of the culture. It was a very fast, but difficult read. If you ever wondered about the culture. I recommend the book.

Below you will find J. D. on Ted Talks below. You will get a better understanding. I am very glad I read it. The only problem I had. I expected it to be about the people of the rural area and Trump and why he won. You can think what you want about why Trump won. I think there are many different reasons. This may be a theory. But, I don't think it is because of them.

My Rant-Our Government

I wasn't sure what to do about my blog. Because since the presidential election. I have been very upset, angry, etc. I wanted to add one other passion on my book blog, under rants. My rants about social justice, civil liberties, democracy, and the election. I never thought to put this on my blog until the other day. Thank goodness I had the blog designer add rant to my book blog.

I am not going to go on and on about Trump and the election as the list can go pretty long. Instead I am not going backward, but forward to be optimistic that our situation will get better in government.

Here I will be posting about social justice, feminism, our diversity in our country which makes our country special.

Thank you for stopping by.

The Nursing Profession-Blame Game

For the first time in a very long time, I am standing up for my profession. I would like to praise Nurse,Theresa Brown RN for her article on CNN.  I left nursing years ago, burned out, and became a Stay at Home Mom. I have been out of the profession for years, I left in 1990.

But, it sounds like from the article about that it is still the same. The blame game, doctors, and the medical establishments want to blame someone, so it is the R. N.
It is a shame that nurses are not recognized for the care of the patient, it is still the M. D,  The registered nurse, is the one that stays at the hospital, and monitors the patient care, and it is their licence that is on the line when something goes wrong.

When I was a registered nurse in early 90's I remember nurse's were getting sued left and right, and blamed for poor care, when it actually was the doctor, who should of been blamed. The nurse is actually the one, that protects the doctor from mistakes being made. By double checking the doctor's order, and co-signing the order. But, of course the doctor, sees it as you are questioning his care. If you claimed neglect, it was known in nursing circle's that other nurses wouldn't go to court and back up your character, and neither would doctor's.

I am happy to see that nurses can now speak out. Years ago, you never head a nurse speak out about the nurses, and the profession. Thank you Theresa Brown RN.

Review on the Best Comfort Shoe

I don't usually promote something like this. But, I have to tell you that Jambu shoes are wonderful. They have done right by me. In the last few years, I have had medical issues with my back, hips, and my feet without resolution. I am going to have to give you background information leading up to this post.

I have gone to doctors, orthopedics, podiatrists. Nothing seemed to help the pain I was in. I had bought Sketchers, for work. I later learned that was the worst thing for my feet and hips.  But, of course no one tells you that you are suppose only wear them for a couple hours.

I was having trouble getting out of my car, and into my car.  By the way, I was only in my early 50's. At the time I thought this was normal getting older. But, later learned this is not the case.

My hips were hurting me. I did not know why. Then most recently I was in a car accident. I didn't know if this exacerbated the problem. Before the accident.   I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.  There isn't any definitive test, but just assumptions.

I went to a podiatrist who told me the best thing is orthotics. Not everyone is the same. I tried it for two years. Then finally realized my feet felt alot better without them in my shoes.  I  did some research on my own online about shoes.  I looked at so many shoes, I had to get rid of all my beautiful high heels, and chic shoes and now, to go with comfort. But, you can find cute shoes that are comfortable, that do have style. Just not the sophisticated shoe I used to wear.
Now, this past year I tried so many shoes, between Naot's, Sketchers,Orthoheels,,New Balance, sneakers, and then it was getting so ridiculous looking at shoes with the gimicks. Shoes with springs.

I then saw a pair of Jambu shoes, I was skeptical. How can a pair of shoes like these have good support. Believe me, they do. They don't look like they would hold up. But they do. I work nine hours a day at Walmart, and they hold up. I don't like spending alot on shoes. But, my Grandtmother used to tell me, shoes are the most important thing. Clothes don't give you comfort, they give you style. But, shoes are the most important.

Now, the shoes are very flexible and you would wear them to the beach. They have alot of cushion that you feel like you are walking on air.  Here are the shoes I bought last year. Believe it they hold up. I was just diagnosed with Congentive Disc Disease. With severe back pain at times at work, getting in the car, out of the car. I still have the problems, but less severe.   I then last week bought a Jambu, sandal I just love them.  Both of them are so comfortable.

I am not suggesting you to go out and buy them right away. Not every shoe is right for each person with the same back and feet problems. I should know, I went through alot trying to find a good pair of shoes.

One other thing, I would like to suggest, are socks. I bought socks from Dr. Scholl's, Health Strides Tri-Zone. They are terrific. They are for working feet. I never thought they would do anything. But, boy with my Asic sneakers that I also bought recenty for my feet problems they are a good combination.

The socks I bought from Walmart. But, unfortunately they don't sell them there anymore. But, you can buy them on Amazon. They are a bit more. But, it is worth it.  One other thing if you don't know this you can get deep discounts at Amazon when you buy online. You just have to keep watching.

Both these shoes were priced at $100. I just waited it out till the price dropped. Both of them I saved quite a bit. The other shoes that I bought recently are Dansko's and Clark's both sandals. I love these shoes. But, like I said before each person is different. So go to the shoe store and check first before buying. I am not a doctor. I am a retired nurse. This is my personal taste. I am so glad I found my Jambu's. I just bought another kind yesterday, and plan on buying one one more pair. I can't rave enough about them.  I hope I have helped someone. There are shoes out there for everyone. Don't give up hope, You just have to be patient.

Susan Cohen and Gracie's Hope

I am posting this to get the word out about a fundraiser my friend is doing.
The organization is called, Gracie's Hope.  I have posted about Susan's daughter previously. But to refresh your memory, I will give you the short tail of it.

Abbey a few years ago, gave birth to triplets in LA but then a complication happened. Abbey, became paralyzed. Her parents, Paul and Susan, brought Abbie back from California to Myrtle Beach, SC and took  over her care.

Since then Susan has been an advocate for her daughter's care. She is doing a fundraiser next month to bring Gracie's Hope to Myrtle Beach.  The treatment not  only will help Abbie but others like Abbie.

The care center will help veterans that have suffered from weapon injuries, it will help people with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Traumatic Brain Injury, PTSD, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, and many other brain injuries.

The reason Susan is fundraising to bring the care center to Myrtle Beach, it is a far drive to Huntersville, NC. It is costly to the families, not many private insurance companies will allow for the treatments. There are many treatments before it can take affect. Gracie's Hope offers grants to families  that can't afford it. It will help many people that have brain injuries and genetic brain disorders.

The treatment is called, Hyperbaric Oxygen  Therapy.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is simply an intermittent, short-term, high dose oxygen inhalation therapy. HBOT is an AMA recognized medical treatment which enhances the body’s natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is used for a wide variety of treatments usually as part of an overall medical care plan. The oxygen level in the patient’s blood-stream is raised many times above normal, which helps control infections and promote healing in many kinds of illness or injury.

What conditions are being treated?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has helped thousands of people with conditions such as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis and other brain disorders. By delivering high levels of oxygen under pressure, hypoxic tissue can be restored allowing healing to take place. Since hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not an FDA approved treatment for neurological conditions, most insurance companies do not cover HBOT treatment costs. As a result there are very few centers and physicians that provide this therapy.

G-d willing Gracie's Hope will be coming to Myrtle Beach in September.

Susan, and Gracie's Hope are having a fundraiser next month. If you are unable to attend you can give a donation. The address is listed on the flyer below:

World Book Night Suspends Operations

I just learned the World Book Night is suspending their operations. So, sad but I wasn't surprised. It was very ex

Spreading the Love of Reading,
Person to Person

Dear World Book Night U.S. friend,

After three years in which thousands and thousands of you distributed over a million and half specially-printed World Book Night paperbacks across America, we are sad to announce that we are suspending operations. The expenses of running World Book Night U.S., even given the significant financial and time commitment from publishers, writers, booksellers, librarians, printers, distributors, shippers--and you, our amazing givers!--are too high to sustain.

This has been a remarkable, passionate undertaking, and it has been a success by all measures, except for one: Outside funding. For three years, the publishing industry and book community have very generously footed the bill and contributed enormous time and effort, and we are so very grateful for all the support.

We did receive some funds via individual donations, and we worked very hard to get grants. We did get some, but there are a lot of other worthy causes out there and only so much money available. We can't carry on without significant, sustainable outside funding.

From World Book Night U.S. Board Chairman Michael Pietsch: "World Book Night's first three years have been a profound experience for everyone involved. The altruistic spirit of the givers and of industry supporters have reminded us all of the transformative impact books have on people's lives, and of the power of a book as a gift. The World Book Night Board joins me in extending their deep gratitude to all who have taken part."

WBN U.S. Exec Director Carl Lennertz added: "Some of you know our names here, but I want to be sure you know these--Laura Peraza and Carolyn Schwartz. They have been here since day one, and they, along with you, are my heroes. Alia Almeida joined us this year and was a creative force. A list of all the booksellers, librarians, authors, and folks in publishing and at Ingram would be too long to include here, but they know who they are and I know they have loved being a part of this beautiful thing we did together."

We are staying on hand through the summer without pay to maintain social media contact with you all, to talk good books, and to announce the winner of the giver essay contest.

YOU, the givers, made it possible for WBN to reach its full potential. For us here at World Book Night, this experience has been life-changing, as we hope it has been for you and recipients of the books. Our gratitude to you is simply immeasurable.

With much love, appreciation, and admiration, thank you!
Team WBN U.S
pensive even with the large supporters. Just think of the cost of shipping and advertising cost.
After three years which thousands of volunteer givers distributed over a million and ha half world book night paperbacks across America, we have to suspend operations. The expenses of running World Book Night U.S. even given a significant financial and time commitment from publishers, writers, givers, booksellers, librarians, printers, distributor, and shippers, are too high to sustain without additional funding.

I was involved twice for WBN. The first time I  was involved I did not have as fun as the second time. I think the first time I did not know what I was doing.  I had thought to do it at my job, where I work. The second time I ventured out and thought outside the box.  The best time I did it, was at the beach. I loved the expression of people's faces when I approached them. Probably thinking what is a stranger coming to me for.  These are strange times we live in. Most people don't approach people on a beach unless you know them. So the look on their faces were priceless.

I would like to thank World Book Night, because I doubt that day will forgotten. I would like to thank you for the experience of being involved in this venture.

Mourning of Israeli Teens

It was 18 days ago that these teenage boys went missing. It was hard not to hear about it. If you are Jewish it was all over the news, on facebook, on social media, etc. If you did not hear about it, your head must have been in the sand.

It is so sad, to hear about this in the news yesterday, about the three teenage boys that were were missing for 18 days.

They were kidnapped and killed very shortly after their abduction by terrorists.   The Jewish world is very sad to hear the news.  I was  hoping that they would be found without incident. I had hoped the teenage boys may have just went out on a joy spree.  That was wishful thinking, because you don't hear of those things happening in Israel.

I am not sure what the significance but most Jews know the number 18 has significance. The number 18 stands for "life".  Maybe there is something in g-ds plan that we don't know about yet.

Today, I was on Facebook. An old friend in Israel that I knew in USY  lives in Israel posted that there is another death. This time, it is a Palestinian teenager.  I hope that this is not going to play out politically. That now, someone is going to pin it on Israel. Saying, Israel did this in retribution for the three Jewish boys killed.  Then their will be another terrorist attack, and it will go back and forth like it did a few years ago. Their memory will be in vain if that is the case.

During this sad time, all Jews across the world are together and mourning the three boys.  May they be blessed.

Our Beloved Rabbi

I have known Rabbi Debbie for a few years. I connected with her right away. She is my kind of person. She is a " free spirit". A Jewish feminist, my kind of person. Our biggest connection is books.  We would occasionally bump into each other at Barnes at Noble at Market Commons.  When we get together, watch out. We can talk for hours about books.

Rabbi Debbie each year for the last four years has been the guest speaker for our Jewish Grand Strand Reads event. From Alice Hoffman, and the Dove Keeper, to Rav Hisda's Daughter, from Maggie Anton, and finally our favorite read, Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker.

She doesn't ask for compensation for these events. But, does this for the love of reading and sharing her knowledge to others.

Rabbi Debbie doesn't have a pulpit. Instead she teaches at the local university, at Coastal Carolina University. She teaches religious studies. Everyone loves Rabbi Deb.

A few years ago, Rav Deb and I were discussing something about a Jewish community read. Then after that I decided to organize, and she did the talking. What a great combination. The rest is history.

Jewish Grand Strand is very upset when we all learned that Rabbi Deb has become ill. She is a prominent Jewish leader in the Jewish community. We all care so much about her.

We all wish her well, and g-d willing a full recovery. .

Remembering Rue McClanahan as Blanche

I didn't realize how young she was when she starred in Golden
Girls with the Bea Arthur, and Getty. She must have been in her 40's.
She passed away today, she was in her mid 70's.  She died of a massive stroke- so sad.

I saw a recent picture of her. I don't want to remember her like that. I want to remember her as a beautiful, refined, classy lady( at least in Golden Girls).

She was great in the Golden Girls.  The Southern Belle with sexual seduction tendencies.

She really made the show. She was so funny.  Brings back memories of the 80's, and the TV shows.
Only one left now is, Betty White.  Thought I would post to share. Just loved Golden Girls.

The Golden Girls brought a view of older citizens as lively, and feisty. I think this changed the perspective of older people. People thought older citizens just waiting to die. I think in some ways that has changed.  Because of the baby boomer generation, which is a large group.  Will not let that happen.

I am reaching the senior age, not there yet, but will be reaching it soon. You still have your spunk, your craziness, and you always think  like a teenager. It never goes away.  I don't think younger people realize that until it is their turn.

Enjoy this video. I think I am going to search for some video's of the Golden Girls.

May you rest in peace, Rue McClanahan.

Disappointment: From the Sidelines of BEA 2014

I am disappointed in BEA and the powers that be this year. They changed the format for people that were unable to attend this year. This year they decided not to stream the panels, and events and conversations on the floor with authors, and publicists.  The past few years that I attended by the side lines at home from my computer, they streamed.

Publishing magazines allowed accessibility to know what galley are hot and would be given out to BEA. There was not any list floating around on the web that I know about.

Third was the disappointment with Saturday, formerly a extension of BEA.  Now called Book Con.

They had a panel of publishers talking about upcoming book club books. Carol, from Book Reporter emailed me back and told me there would not be anything on youtube this year. But they would still have their slide show-how disappointing.

I am writing this post with a heavy heart. Because in past years BEA has thought of people that were unable to attend. This year was very different. I did not feel like, I usually do. Previous years even though I was sitting in the side lines

I could feel the beat of Book Expo. Not this year unfortunately. I am writing this post to let BEA and the powers that be about my disappointment.

I was expecting streaming of Book Expo this year and more exposure to other programs that they have done in the past. For example conversations with the publicists, or authors about what was going on. The buzz on the floor, etc. There wasn't any publications online this year to give you a list of galleys that were hot and a buzz( I have to get that one). The third thing is, Carol Fitzgerald organizes a program each year for book clubs. Publicists talk about what books will be hot for book clubs. Formerly it was a extension of BEA. Now it is called Book Con.

It was great in previous years.  They had televised the entire presentation. If you were unable to see it, then you would be able to watch it on you tube later .  You were also able to watch  conversations with the authors, and people in the know on the floor, and what things were coming up. This way you felt like you were there.

But this year, you were not able to watch anything from the sidelines- how disappointing.

I had contacted BEA from Facebook and they told me they decided not to stream. Not enough people were watching it. Instead it will be on youtube. But, it doesn't have the other programs and panels instead it is clips of 10 minutes. Last year you were able to see everything. On youtube you can see the clips but they are not the entire panel.  You can watch the celebrities, but that is not what is important to me.

                                      The AUTHORS, !!!, NOT CELEBRITIES

I contacted Carol,  from Book Reporter and she gave me more disappointing news. She told me it would not be available this year. But she would be putting the slide show on her website.  But, darn that is not the same as actually watching the enthusiasm of the publicists about the book.

I would think streaming or putting the presentation on at youtube would bring more publicity for the books. Isn't that the idea behind BEA in the first place?
-hand sell.  Another form of publicity and talking it up about books.

Not just reading about it, watching the enthusiasm of the publicists and authors. After seeing a presentation and the person that was presenting. If the person was enthusiastic, Most people would take notice. They would go to the store and buy the book after seeing the panel.

My other complaint there was not anywhere that I could find. Any publicity information about what the buzz books were this year at BEA. In years past Publisher's Weekly, or other publishing magazines put out a list of galleys that were hot for BEA.

This year I was so psyched expecting the same from the publishing magazines, and BEA. This was a wonderful service to us book bloggers, or any body that were unable to attend.

I am making my voice heard hoping someone from BEA will hear me. Please, Please make BEA more accessible to everyone. To us book bloggers, and publishers, and consumers that are unable to attend

Make your voice heard, and write on your book blog, facebook twitter, Let the publicists that you correspond with know as well about your thoughts on BEA.

All The Organizing is over, Now The Fun Begins.

I am happy to say everything is finally in place for our first  " Jewish Grand Strand Reads". It has been a very long process. I did it last year, but it was word of mouth without any of the temples being involved.  This year all the Jewish organizations are supporting it.

I was worried about this year with all the organizations involved. I thought I would loose control of my "baby". Luckily, this did not happen.  The different organizations let us run with it. Do the planning how we wanted.  Jesse, our temple's secretary at Temple Emanu-El has been great. She helped us with flyers and sending out emails.  Check out the invitation and flyer.

The only thing left is publicity. I am still hoping that our local paper would jump on board and talk to us about our event.  As of yet, nothing has happened. I really thought they would be interested because they don't have anything like this in town.  The Myrtle Beach community doesn't have a community read.  I was hoping that this may interest the community. But, I have to remember this is different than up north.

Anyway I am happy that the organizational part is done. We now have to wait for the end of the month RSVP's will start coming in.  We picked a nice restaurant in town called, Sea Captain's House. It is beautiful right on the water. The restaurant is encased in glass.   The menu is preset with everything inclusive with our guest speaker. I think it is a terrific deal, and a nice afternoon.

Are you wondering what book we picked? If you follow my blog than you may already know.  It is The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker.   I have been promoting The Golem And The Jinni to the hilt. Helene must be sick of me now. She must think I am a stalker. LOL!!

I LOVE THE BOOK THAT MUCH!!! MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME

I have been wanting her to come down to South Carolina. But, unfortunately I am not sure why. No one has asked her to tour down south. I don't know why the Jewish community down here has not asked her to any Jewish speaking engagements. But, for that matter I don't think anyone has asked her up north either.  I am wonder why her novel has not caught on...

A wonderful read. If you have not heard of it, you must have your head in the sand.  Everyone in our Jewish Community that has read it, LOVED IT! That must mean something.  I did not think I was a fan of magical realism.  But all that has changed recently.  Hoping some producer buys the rights to make this into a movie.

The book has romance, historical fiction, Jewish themes, magical creatures, Middle East and Jewish cultural themes. You can read my review here and also her guest post you can scroll below and find her there.

You can check out the novel on Helene Wecker's website, also the author just had a wonderful discussion and Q/A on goodreads. One other event our book club is having, Helene Wecker will be joining us on SKYPE next month. We are all excited to meet her.
